SHARON: (READING BIBLE) Sam, what's this passage all about?
SAM: (READING NEWSPAPER) What, dear?
SHARON: I said, this passage in the Bible, what's it mean?
SAM: Sharon, I'm trying to read the paper. You're through with what you're doing so you interrupt me, is that it?
SHARON: Since you phrased it so lovingly, yes, that's about it.
SAM: Okay, you got me. Now, what are you reading?
SHARON: The Bible. Ever hear of it?
SAM: No. Is it a new book you bought?
SHARON: Sure.
SAM: Okay, you win. What passage are you talking about?
SHARON: Here it is, where it talks about the baptism of Jesus.
SAM: Okay, let me see it. (TAKES BIBLE FROM SHARON AND READS) Yeah, right. What's the problem. Is it about the dove coming down on Him?
SHARON: That was the Holy Spirit. I know that. But what I don't understand is -- did Jesus know He was God before His baptism?
SAM: When did Jesus realize He was God?
SHARON: Right.
SAM: That's pretty heavy duty.
SHARON: Well, what do you think? Did He perform miracles when He was a little child? You know, like the story of the little boy, Jesus, forming a bird from clay and then breathing life into it.
SAM: I think we can discount that one. Just a clever story.
SHARON: All right. When, then?
SAM: When did Jesus know He was God? That's the question, right?
SHARON: You know the question. Quit stalling.
SAM: All right. I'll quit stalling. I don't know.
SHARON: Can't we figure it out from the scriptures?
SAM: Okay, okay, let's figure it out. One of the Gospel writers says He was in the Temple when He was twelve. Remember that?
SHARON: Sure. He was asking questions, wasn't He?
SAM: (LOOKING IN THE BIBLE) Here it is in Luke. He was learning from the teachers. They were amazed at His understanding and His answers.
SHARON: Isn't that where He said, "I must be doing My Father's work?"
SAM: Yeah, that's what He said.
SHARON: Do you think that was when He realized He was God, when He was twelve, there in the Temple?
SAM: I don't know. He said, "My Father's work," didn't He?
SHARON: Maybe something stirred inside Him at that time to learn more of God. Maybe it was just the beginning of a realization. I remember when I was about that age taking my first trip away from home. My mother put me on a plane and I was a little scared at first and then I realized that the world was so big. I had thought it was just my neighborhood and my school and I found out it was really big with lots of people in it.
SAM: Twelve was the age Hebrew boys started learning the scriptures. He said: "I must be doing My Father's work." That means He must have been thinking about doing His Father's work before that. Therefore, He must have known He was God before that.
SHARON: Now, wait. Jesus was always God, right?
SAM: Right.
SHARON: And was always full of the Holy Spirit, right?
SAM: Right.
SHARON: So, He probably did realize He was God sooner?
SAM: Sooner than twelve?
SHARON: Yeah. He was full of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit would teach Him and also restrain Him.
SAM: What's that got to do with when He knew He was God?
SHARON: Listen to me. If He knew at an early age, younger than twelve, He would have to keep the knowledge to Himself until the right time. The patience of the Holy Spirit would help do that.
SAM: The right time being His baptism. That must have been the sign from God that it was time to begin His ministry. That just might be it.
SHARON: Then we can't know for sure when He knew He was God. Right?
SAM: No, we can't. The Bible doesn't say, so neither can we.
SHARON: But we did learn something.
SAM: We always learn something from searching the scriptures.
SHARON: Stop sounding like a brochure about a church conference.
SAM: Well, we did learn something.
SHARON: Sure. I learned that Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit and therefore He was patient.
SAM: He must have needed patience to wait more than eighteen years to begin a ministry He knew He was called to.
SHARON: I need some of that patience.
SAM: You have it from the Holy Spirit.
SHARON: That's right.
SAM: I know I do.
SHARON: Have patience? You?
SAM: Of course, me. I'm still waiting to read my paper, aren't I?
SHARON: You sure are.
SAM: Right. (BEGINS READING HIS PAPER)
SHARON: Sam?
SAM: What is it now?
SHARON: Nothing. Just testing your patience.
SAM: Oh, boy.
