Who Is He?
Children's sermon
THE BIG INFLUENCE OF SMALL THINGS
Exegetical Aim: The identity of Jesus.
Props: No props are used, but a letter with your name on it or other items that identify you may be used. Work them in at the appropriate time. Example: If you are a teacher by vocation, bring something that identifies you as a teacher and tie it in.
Lesson: Good morning! I have a question for you and I am not sure you are going to know the answer to it. Are you ready? (response) Okay, here goes. Who am I? (response) You might need to ask the question again Who am I? (the preacher) Yes, that's what I do; I am a preacher. How do you know that I am a preacher? (response) What does a preacher do? (response) Okay, that's a pretty good answer. But, let me ask my question again, who am I? I mean besides a preacher, who am I? (brother Brett) Yes, my name is Brett. Does anyone know my last name? (response) My last name is Blair. Brett Blair is my name. How do you know that I am Brett Blair? (response) I hang around a couple other Blairs. A lady named Cyndi Blair and a little girl named Hannah Blair - she's my daughter - and a little boy named Brett, Jr. We are all Blairs. What name do you think is written on our mailbox? (Blair) When I write my name on a piece of paper, what name do you think I write? (Blair) Okay, I am a preacher and I am Brett Blair. That much we know. Let me ask you the question one more time. Who am I? Besides a preacher and guy that goes by the name Brett Blair, who am I? (response) Let me give you a hint: It's who you are too. (response) You may need to guide them here. We all believe in Jesus Christ. So, who am I? (a Christian, a child of God) They may give various synonyms - work them toward the proper title. That's right. I am a Christian. I am a child of God.
Jesus asked his followers this question. He said, "Who do people say that I am?" Do you know who the people thought Jesus was? Some were saying he was a great teacher. He is a great teacher, but is that all he is? (response) Some were saying he does incredible miracles. He does do great miracles, but is that all he is - a miracle worker? (response) Some were saying that he was a man of God and could tell the future, but is that all he is? A man who can tell the future? (response)
Application: He was all these, but let me ask you: Who do you say he is? (response) They may need some guidance here. Who is Jesus' Father? (response) And that makes Jesus, God's ... (response) Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is God! Can you believe that? (response) The most important question we will ever be asked is: "Who is Jesus?" I would like to give you my answer to that question. Jesus is my Lord. He is the reason I get up in the morning and he is the very last one I speak to at night. He is the door I walk through and the light that helps me see when it's dark. He is my bread when I am hungry and the one who forgives me when I sin. Jesus is my brother and he is my friend. That's who Jesus is to me!
Let's Pray: Jesus, you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. You are my light. You are my bread. You are my hope. You are my Lord. Amen.

Proper 16
Romans 12:1--8
Many Parts, One Rose
Exegetical Aim: All of the gifts in the body of Christ are needed.
Props: A long--stemmed rose, and another rose with all the parts pulled apart - petals, leaves, stem, and thorns. Place both the long--stemmed rose and the pulled--apart rose in a box so that they cannot be seen.
Lesson: How many of you like flowers? (response) Oh good, I like flowers, too. Guess what I brought with me today? Pull out the barren stem. Isn't this a pretty flower? (response) No? What's the matter with it? (response) Oh, it's not all together, is it? Hmm. Wait a minute. I know what it needs. Pull some of the greenery out and hold it up to the stem. Lay the flower on the ground in front you with the greenery in the appropriate places, as if the greenery is now attached. Now it looks like a flower, doesn't it? (response) No? Ah, I know what it needs. Now bring out the thorns, and "attach" them to the stem. Does that make it better? (response) Oh, it still needs something else, doesn't it? Pull out the petals, and place them on the top of the stem. Now that's a beautiful rose, isn't it? (response) No? Why not? It has petals, it has leaves, it has thorns, and it has a stem. Doesn't that make it beautiful? (response) Why not? All the pieces of the rose are here. (but they're not together) Bring out the full rose. Like this one? (response) What makes this one beautiful and that one not? (response) You mean it's not enough just to have all the pieces here; they need to be together to make the rose beautiful?
Application: The Apostle Paul said that we are many parts but one body in Christ. You by yourself would not be the church, would you? (response) It takes all of us here to be the church. Just a couple of you would not be the church. But tell me something. If we all came here each Sunday take the detached petals and drop them cascading from a position where everyone can see and we did our own thing. Would that be a good church? (response) Hold up the long--stemmed rose. What should we do? (come together) That's right. It's not enough to be part of the church. We need to be together, work with one another, and help one another. That's what makes this rose beautiful.
Let's Pray: Lord, remind us that we all are very important parts of the church. Humble us so that we might work together. In Christ's name. Amen.
