Erick Nielson became acquainted firsthand with the Great Depression of the 1930s on a farm in North Dakota, not far from the state's largest city, Fargo. Even as the state's largest metropolis, Fargo wasn't all that large in the '30s, probably with a population of not more than 30,000. But it was the center of a large sprawling farm population where farmers for miles around brought their produce and did their serious shopping.
