The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer

Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Lord God, Light of the World, darkness is sometimes easier than light. When it's dark, no-one can see me and I can hide safely - from you, from other people and from myself. But when you plunge me into light and I suddenly see, life becomes more difficult. Sometimes I have to make decisions which upset the status quo or which cause me to be rejected by my own social group. And if that rejection should come from the Church, it's doubly painful. Light of the World, give me the courage to see. Give me the strength to understand. Give me the sensitivity to remember that other people, especially children, are very vulnerable to anything I might say or do.
Lord God, Light of the World, darkness is sometimes easier than light. Give me the courage to see, the strength to understand and the sensitivity to remember that other people are vulnerable to my words and deeds.
Lord God, Light of the World, your Church should be full of light which streams out to the world through its stained glass windows. But sometimes those same windows prevent your light coming into the Church. Remind us that we are your Church and that the world looks to us to glimpse your light. Enable us to become so full of light that we are transparent, and your light can be transmitted to all with whom we come into contact.
Today we pray for your light to fill the Church in Uganda and its Archbishop, Livingstone Mpalanyi-Nkoyo.
Lord God, Light of the World, fill your Church with light so that the eyes of all who are touched by the Church may be opened.
Lord God, Light of the World, the darkness of evil is constantly apparent here on earth, damaging human beings. Open our eyes and give us your sight so that we may become as appalled as you are by the wickedness which hurts humanity. As you wash the scales from our eyes, make us determined first to identify, and then to constantly struggle against, the forces of evil, until all your children shall be free and the whole earth live to praise your name.
Today we pray especially for ...

Lord God, Light of the World, help and strengthen those who are engaged in the task of bringing light to a dark world. We pray today for missionaries, for teachers and educators, for health professionals, for those who serve in any capacity, and for parents. Bring them insight and courage, and a willingness to suffer in the cause of truth, so that we may all become increasingly enlightened and thus more human.
In our own community we pray especially today for ...
Lord God, Light of the World, strengthen missionaries, teachers, parents and all those engaged in bringing light to a dark world.
Lord God, Light of the World, pour your loving, healing power into all those who are sick, that they May they be aware of your presence with them, and feel supported by the prayers of all their friends. We name them before you ....
Lord God, Light of the World, we pray that the sick may soon be restored to full health and strength. We name them before you ....
Lord God, Light of the World, bereavement is a time of darkness for all those who lose someone they love. May your light shine into the hearts of those who have recently been bereaved, or who have been bereaved in previous years at this time. As they struggle in the blindness of their pain, may they know your comforting presence, and may they know that their loved ones are safe in your company, living and loving with you. We remember especially the families and friends of ... who died recently, and ... who died in previous years at this time.
Lord God, Light of the World, we remember before you the families and friends of ... who died recently, and ... who died in previous year(s) at this time, asking for your comfort for them in their loss.
We ask all these prayers through Jesus Christ, our Saviour.
Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
