Loving And Forgiving God...
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Loving and forgiving God, I find many ways to insulate myself against you. I fill my silences with noise, just in case you should emerge from the depths of my being into my consciousness. I pour my soul into things, into little luxuries, into work, into Christian busyness. And I do what I can (within Christian and ethical boundaries of course,) to gain wealth. Loving and forgiving God, strip away my insulation even though I kick and scream and fight you with all my might. And loving God, when I'm stripped and vulnerable, help me to spot you and to discover in you all that love you're longing to pour upon me...
Loving and forgiving God, keep your Church free from the insidious seduction of wealth. Although we must seek always to remain solvent, may we give away generously from our income so that those less fortunate can be properly supported. And give us discernment to recognise institutional greed and to resist the temptation to judge life in monetary terms.
Today we pray especially for Ontario, Canada, with Archbishop Percival O'Driscoll, and Stavanger, Norway, with Bishop Ernst Baasland.
Loving and forgiving God, an obsession with material riches is damaging our world. We sit by and allow some people to starve. We fail to rise up in condemnation of those who exploit the poor in the name of business. We watch as our planet is gradually squeezed of all its natural resources, and we too use more than our fair share of energy. Bring our world back to a true sense of values, that we may all realise the huge spiritual wealth you have waiting for us.
Today we pray especially that our leaders are filled with your wisdom as they make decisions affecting the whole world.
Loving and forgiving God, enable us to pass onto our children a true sense of the important things in life and a lasting order of priorities. May we protect them from materialism but teach them the importance of wealth, especially the importance of using wealth correctly and sharing it fully. Protect them from envy and greed, and help them to appreciate all your good gifts.
Loving and forgiving God, we hold within your loving, generous presence all those who are sick. May they touch the hem of your cloak, for they need only a tiny contact with you to be healed. We name before you today ....
Loving and forgiving God, we pray for all those who have died recently, that they may be always in your presence, absorbing your great love for them. We pray too for the families and friends who are left behind grieving over their loss, and those who continue to grieve over someone who died in previous years at this time. We name before you the people of America and ...
We ask all these prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
