“This is my Son, my chosen: listen to him!” (V. 35b)
Good morning dear children,
Thank you for joining me this morning. It's so fun to see you and to talk with you on this festival day we call Transfiguration Sunday. I have an amazing story to tell you from Luke's gospel. This story is so awesome it will dazzle your imagination.
Notice what I have here. (show mirror and flashlight) Kids like to play by shining this light on things. (demonstrate shining light on several objects)
When Jesus went up a mountain with his disciples, his disciples saw something they had never seen before. Jesus' appearance changed and his clothing became dazzling white.
(select an object and shine the reflected light on it)
Suddenly, ghost – like, Moses and Elijah from the far distant past appeared with Jesus.
The disciples, awestruck, blurted out OMG! (Oh my goodness) “let us build three monuments, one for you Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
Just then a voice spoke from a cloud. “This is my Son, my chosen: listen to him!”
(shine light on a symbol of Jesus like a cross)
The awe struck disciples realized Jesus was God's chosen for the sake of the world.
The disciples realized Jesus was more special than Moses or Elijah. And that Jesus would redeem the world from sins. But they kept this “God light” (theophany) experience, a secret – until later.
Have you had an experience when you suddenly realized something or learned something new? You said, “ah ha, I get it.” (shine light on each person) Do you remember when someone said, “I love you?” That's an OMG (oh my goodness) experience! What are some other OMGs that surprise and make you awestruck? (children share)
Prayer: Dear Jesus, you are God's Son. Wow. Thank you. Amen.
