Third Sunday In Lent
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Exodus 17:1-7
Theme: With Us Or Not?
Call To Worship
Two sides comprise every journey: the found side during which we trust in God's care, and the lost side where we fear that alone we will not make it through. At the worst, we scuffle and fuss within the confines of confusion, then shout, "Are you here with us or not, God?" At the best, we quiet down, hear God's voice in the silence, and proceed with hope. Wherever you are on your present journey, know that, here, you are welcome.
Collect
You see through the quarreling within our soul, O God, that we must have the water necessary for life if our journey is to lead to life. Your provision of the water of life assures us that you are here travelling with us. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Gracious God, strengthen our capacity to divide the journey into manageable stages so we can escape becoming overwhelmed and afraid that you have deserted us in some wasteland. Amen.
22A Hymns
"When Israel Was In Egypt's Land" Tune: GO DOWN, MOSES
"Nearer, My God, To Thee" Tune: BETHANY
"Lead Us From Death To Life" Tune: WORLD PEACE PRAYER
Third Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: Romans 5:1-11
Theme: Because Of God
Call To Worship
Leader: Know that our faith frees us. Through Jesus Christ, we find peace with God. Because of our peace with God and because of God's peace with us, we shall find peace with ourselves.
People: Because of God, we can know peace. Thanks be to God.
Collect
You know where we hurt, O God, and what causes us to be brokenhearted. You know what we can change and over what we have little power. You know where we are weak, but you see us as worthy of your compassion. Rather than abandoning us, you bring reconciliation and the amazement of grace. Through Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
In our yearning for wholeness, O God, we forget to sit still, to turn toward that quiet center where we begin to listen to you. Hush the racket of conflict within and around us so that we might reach into the silence and know your peace. Through Jesus Christ. Amen.
22A Hymns
"A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" Tune: EIN' FESTE BURG
"We Yearn, O [Christ][Lord], For Wholeness" or "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded" Tune: PASSION CHORALE
"Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me" Tune: PILOT
Third Sunday In Lent
Gospel: John 4:5-42
Theme: Water Of Life
Call To Worship
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Come, for it is time to worship God.
Collect
So little we know about the eternal, O God. The closest we come is in those moments that seem to transcend time yet somehow also hold the kernel of all time. So little we know about you, Spirit God, still full of mystery, and yet a part of us seems to know you completely. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Where do you get that living water, God? What is this thirst that it will quench? Give me a drink, dear God. Amen.
22A Hymns
"Jesus, Keep Me Near The Cross" Tune: NEAR THE CROSS
"We Want To Learn To Live In Love" Tune: CANONBURY
"When Life The Woman At The Well" Tune: CRAVEN
