Teachers: This week's Bible story tells the background of the
birth of Jesus. Focus your students' attention on their own
birth. Invite them to bring the first photographs that their
parents ever took of them. You might make a game of this. See if
the class members can correctly identify the photos.
The verse leading into the gospel lesson tells of the genealogy of Jesus. Take this opportunity to have each student create a family tree. In this way students will understand their own family background. Through this project you can relate the Bible story of Jesus' family background.
Your family tree project could be on an 81/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Have the students draw an outline of a tree. Place their grandparent's names on the trunk, their parent's names on the branches, and the student's name and student's siblings in the top branches. You could label each tree "(Student's name) is part of the family of God."
Parents: Jesus' birth is a good time to review your child's own birth. Sit down with your child and look at the pages of your child's baby book. Retell the story of your child's birth. Tell about how you and your spouse met. Talk about your family 's genealogy. Explain to your child that Christmas is a time to celebrate Jesus' birthday.
