All Are Welcome

“and gathered all whom he found, both good and bad, so the wedding hall was filled with guests.” (v. 10b)
Good morning boys and girls,
How are you this morning? I am so happy you are here in worship today. I'm happy because I get to see you and I get to tell you about God.
Did you know that Jesus told made-up stories we call parables?
Made-up stories, are like windows to see through, to see the real meaning of something.
Here's my made-up story like one that Jesus told:
Once upon a time a boy named Jason decided to celebrate his birthday. He invited his three best friends, Moe, Joe, and Roe. “Come to my party,” Jason said. “There'll be cake, candles, a clown, a bounce house, a water slide, and gourmet hot dogs.” But all three friends gave naughty, nasty responses. Moe said, “Can't come, too busy.” Joe moaned, “I don't like parties.” Roe scoffed, “Bug off Jason.”
So Jason said, “Okay, I'll invite all the kids in the neighborhood, those I like and those I don't particularly care for.” They all came. His house and yard were full.
So Jason enjoyed a beautiful birthday celebration after all.
Jesus told a made-up story like that to describe the kingdom of heaven. A king invited his friends to a banquet but no one came. So the king invited everyone and they came.
The kingdom of heaven is like a banquet. Everybody is welcome – not just the favorite few, but the whole world wide neighborhood.
We see a little bit of the kingdom of heaven whenever we worship. The kingdom of heaven comes whenever we receive Holy Communion. The kingdom of heaven is near when we reach out to others in need. Above all Jesus' kingdom happens whenever we trust and believe God's love and grace.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, we will watch for your kingdom in our everyday lives. Give us eyes to see and hearts to believe. Amen.
