"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. (v. 8)
Good morning, boys and girls. Did you know that this is the last Sunday in the church year? We call today, Christ The King Sunday, and it is always the last Sunday of every church year. Next week we will begin the season of Advent, but first we must end the year with Christ The King Sunday.
Everything I know has a beginning and an end to it. For instance, I brought along this calendar to share with you. When you open the calendar, you'll notice that there are a lot of numbers and every one of them stands for a day. Do you see the number 1? (let them answer) The number 1 was a (name the day of the week). It began at 12:00 midnight and ended at 11:59, which is one minute before we start day two. It has a beginning and an end.
There are also seven days in one week. You never have eight days or six days, but always seven days. Seven days make one week. It begins on Sunday and ends on Saturday. There are just so many days in a month. January has 31 days and June has thirty days, but each of them is a month. January cannot have thirty days or 32 days. It always has 31 days. It has a beginning and an end.
There are twelve months in one year. On the last day of December, we end the year and on January 1, we start a new year. There is a beginning and an end.
There is a reason why I am sharing this with you. The reason is that Jesus said he was the beginning and the end. He used the letters of the alphabet. Our alphabet has 26 letters. What is the first letter of the alphabet? (let them answer) What is the last letter of the alphabet? (let them answer) That's right, the first letter is A and the last letter is Z. If Jesus were here today and he was talking to you, he would say, "I am the A and the Z." Jesus used a different language but he used the first letter of the alphabet and the last letter of the alphabet.
What does this mean? It means that everything began with God and everything will end with God. It means that Jesus was at the beginning of the world and he will be at the end of the world. We should have no fear because we know how much Jesus loves us and cares for us. We know the world started a long time ago and when it started, Jesus was there to make the heavens and the earth and all of the oceans and all of the land. He even created you and many other people. Jesus will be there at the end of the world, when he will start a whole new world for all of us. Amen.
