The best ever hand-me-down
Children's sermon
Object:
an item "handed down" to you from another family member
(the example here is a set of roller skates)
Good morning boys and girls. How many of you know how to
roller skate? (Let them answer.) My first set of roller skates
belonged to my older brother. He learned to skate. Then he
outgrew his skates. When I finally learned to skate, my parents
gave me his old pair. Sometimes this is called a "hand-me-down."
Other kinds of hand-me-downs could be bicycles. How many of you
are riding a bike or a tricycle that first belonged to an older
brother or sister? (Let them answer.) Sometimes when your older
brothers or sisters move out of the house you get to move into
their bedrooms. Has that happened to any of you? (Let them
answer.) That's another example of a hand-me-down.
Can any of you name some other things that you've received from older brothers and sisters, or that you've given to younger brothers and sisters? (Let them answer.)
Did you know that God hands something down to us? It is just like receiving our older brother or sister's bike, or tricycle, or room. God sent us Jesus. God sent Jesus to rescue us and adopt us as his children. When God sent Jesus it meant that we received something. Just as we receive an older brother's bike or skates, we receive Jesus. When Jesus comes to us we are no longer alone. We have someone to help us. We have someone to guide us.
The next time you are using those skates, or bike, or whatever, which was given to you by an older brother or sister, remember what God also gives you. God gave you Jesus. Jesus is the best hand-me-down that anyone can receive. Jesus comes to help us.
