Brothers and sisters
Children's sermon
Object:
some photos of brothers and sisters (young and old)
I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the
congregation I will praise you. (v. 12)
Good morning, boys and girls. Did everyone have a wonderful Christmas? Did you help celebrate the birthday of Jesus? (let them answer) How many birthdays are there in your family? (let them answer) Your father has a birthday, your mother has a birthday, you have a birthday, and your brothers and sisters have birthdays. How many times do you celebrate birthdays every year? (let them answer) There are a lot of celebrations in your family, aren't there?
I brought along some pictures that I have and I want to show them to you. Do you know any of the people in this picture? (let them look at a picture) What is special about a picture like this? (let them answer) Let's look at another picture and tell me if you know any of the people in this picture. (repeat with as many pictures of brothers and sisters that you have collected)
Do you know why these are special pictures? They are special because each picture is a picture of brothers, or sisters, or brothers and sisters together. Brothers and sisters are very special in families. We learn a lot about living from our brothers and sisters.
Jesus thought the family plan was also a very good plan for him and he talks about all of the people that call him God as brothers and sisters. Did you know that Jesus was your brother? (let them answer) That's what the Bible teaches us and it is a good teaching. Jesus is proud of us for being his brothers and sisters. Jesus tells us that he is so proud of us that he will call us by name in the kingdom of God. He will introduce us to many other brothers and sisters that live around the world.
I can hear Jesus talking about it now. (use the children's names and introduce them to other names like Hans, Pedro, Chan, and the like) No matter where you live in the world, Jesus knows our names and the names of all the other people in the world that call themselves Christians.
So, remember that brothers and sisters are good and that Jesus is a brother to all of us. That makes God our Father and that is also very good. Amen.
