Celebrate! Jesus is coming again!
Children's sermon
Object:
a Christmas tree angel
The Point: As God’s children we can lift up our heads and hearts because Jesus will return
The Lesson: Thank you, boys and girls, for joining me. This is a special time of the year. We are preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We celebrate Jesus’ birth because he came to show us that God loves us and wants us to be a part of his family. To celebrate Jesus’ birth we decorate our homes and our church too. All the lights and decorations announce that we have something to celebrate. Our Savior Jesus has come to us!
When we put up our Christmas tree, I will place this angel on the very top of the tree. (show the angel) The Christmas tree angel is the symbol of the season for me. The angel announces that a Savior has been born to us. The angel calls us to be ready and make room for Jesus in our lives. No matter how hard or difficult life might be we are to look up. Then seeing the angel we are reminded of the good news that a Savior has been born to us.
Today, our reading from Luke reminds us that we have another reason to lift up our heads and hearts. He will come again. Jesus said: “... stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Jesus wants us to know that even when things are hard and life isn’t fair we need to look up. When someone wins a race do they look down? No, they lift up their hands and heads in celebration. We are God’s children. We celebrate the birth of our Savior. And we celebrate the promise that Jesus will return.
We have good reason to lift our heads and hearts, we have victory in life with Jesus. Believe in Jesus and the joy of his return will chase away all the darkness of life.
As you celebrate in joy the birth of Jesus, lift your heads and hearts. Our Savior Jesus will come again!
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Jesus, there is joy and peace as we prepare to celebrate your birth. You came to love and forgive us, to unite us in faith. We rejoice in your birth and look forward in confidence and faith to your triumphant return. Lord Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
