Christmas in July
Children's sermon
Object:
some Christmas tree ornaments and a July calendar with
25th circled
Good morning, boys and girls. I hope you are all ready for
Christmas. It's only one week away. (Show the calendar.)
To help celebrate Christmas, I brought some ornaments to put on the tree. (Show the ornaments.) Some of you are looking at me in a strange way. You are looking at me like it's not really Christmas. The calendar here says Christmas is next week. You mean this isn't December? What month is it? Oh, my! I made a mistake. I read this morning's lesson. It sounded like the Christmas lesson. You mean Christmas isn't for five months? Wow, did I ever goof. I'm glad you told me. Well, let me tell you about this morning's lesson, anyway. You tell me if you think it sounds like Christmas.
Our lesson says that something wonderful is going to happen to us. It talks about our world "groaning in labor pains." That sounds to me like a baby is about to be born. It says that "for in hope we are saved." That sounds like Jesus is about to arrive. The lesson even tells us that if we hope for something we do not see that we wait for it with patience. During Advent -- right before Christmas -- we wait for Christmas to come. When we do that we always have to wait patiently. You are right. It's not Christmas. It's July. Our lesson certainly sounds like Christmas. Our lesson says that something wonderful is going to happen. We, as Christians, know what that is. It is God, through Jesus, coming for us.
Even though it is July, we can celebrate Christmas now. We can celebrate Christmas because Jesus is here. He is here to save us, because each of us is a child of God. As a child of God, you can celebrate Christmas every day of the year. Merry Christmas in July!
