Clean and fresh
Children's sermon
Object:
a dirty sock, a clean sock, and some detergent
Good morning, boys and girls. I thought I would bring some laundry today. I'm running out of clean clothes and I need to wash some socks. How many of you help with the laundry at home? (wait for a show of hands) What do you do to help? (let them answer) Some of the answers may be: "I collect the laundry baskets." "I help fold clothes." "I put clothes away when they're done." "I put clothes in the dryer and push the button." Most of you help with the laundry in different ways. I brought some socks with me today. Let's look at them. Better yet, I need a volunteer. (choose a child) Close your eyes. What can you tell me about these two socks? (hold the socks up, the dirty one first) The first one smells horrible! It's been worn already and it's very dirty and smelly. But the second one smells nice and fresh. I wore both of those socks. Why do you think one smells so horrible and one smells fresh? (let them answer) Right, one of the socks has been washed and one hasn't. How do I get the dirty one to smell as fresh as the clean one? Can I just wash it in water? (let them answer) No, I have to use a detergent or this laundry soap to get it to look clean and fresh. (hold up detergent)
Our lesson today talks about being in Christ and being a new creation or finding that God is the source of life. When we follow Jesus, even though we still get dirty and smelly like this stinky, old sock because we make mistakes, God says we're as clean and new as this fresh sock. (show both socks) We can't really get in the washing machine, but following Jesus makes us all clean. Will this clean sock get dirty again? (let them answer) As soon as I wear it, it will smell just like the dirty one. Then they'll both need washing again and again. Every morning when we get up, we discover that God is where all life comes from and that we are a new, clean creation in God's eyes. We are all clean and fresh and new!
