Curb your tongue!
Children's sermon
Object:
a container with black and white marbles and some candy
Good morning! I brought something good for you today. I
brought some candy. Would any of you like to have some of this
candy? (Show the candy and let them answer.) Okay, here's how you
can get a piece of the candy. In this container I have some black
and white marbles. I'm going to let each one of you draw out a
marble. If you get a white marble, you win a piece of candy. If
you get a black one, you don't. Does everybody understand? (Let
them answer and then draw out a marble.)
Okay, now some of you won a piece of candy and others
didn't. I know those who won feel pretty good about it, but what
about those who didn't win. How do you guys feel about this game?
(Let the losers respond.) Yes, it's not much fun to lose. It
feels a lot better when you win, doesn't it? (Let them answer.)
Now, I played that game with you to show you something that
the Bible teaches us. Our mouths are a lot like this container.
We can let good things come out of our mouth that make people
feel good or we can let bad things come out of our mouth that
make people feel bad. Which do you think we ought to be doing?
Should we be saying things that make people feel good or bad
things that hurt them? (Let them answer.) Yes, of course. We
should try to say things that make people feel good.
So, let's do this. All those who got black marbles can put
them back in and let's say that everyone got a white marble. That
would be like letting only good things come out of our mouth.
(Let the losers put the black marbles back in and take a piece of
candy.)
Let's ask God to help us control our tongues so that we
don't say things that hurt people.
Dear Father in Heaven: Please help us control our tongues so that
we do not say things that hurt others. Help us to speak only kind
words to others. Amen.
