Finding that which was lost
Children's sermon
Object:
an object that you once lost, but found again
Good morning! Have you ever lost anything that was important
to you and then found it again? (Let them answer and tell about
things they have lost and then found.) Let me show you something
that I lost and then found (show your object and talk about it).
We know that finding something we thought was lost makes us
very happy. In the Gospel reading today, Jesus tells us about two
things that were lost. Does anybody remember what they were? (Let
them answer. Some will probably remember both the lost sheep and
the lost coin.)
Jesus says that, just like these people were so happy to
find the lost sheep and the lost coin, God is happy when He finds
somebody who has been lost from Him. How do people get lost from
God? (Let them answer with whatever they can think of and then
give examples of those who fall away for one reason or another.)
Let me ask you a question. Do you know anybody who is lost?
Somebody who doesn't know Jesus? Somebody, perhaps, who used to
go to church, but doesn't go anymore? (Let them answer.) What
could you do to bring those persons into the church? (Let them
answer.) Yes, you could ask them to come to Sunday school with
you some Sunday. If they did that and they became friends of
Jesus, would that make God happy? (Let them answer.) Of course it
would! That's what Jesus is telling us when he says, "There is
joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who
repents."
How many of you will make a real effort to invite a friend
to church soon? (Let them answer.) Okay, that's good. I know you
will try to do that. Let's ask God to help us do that.
Dear God: Please give us the strength and the courage to invite
our friends to come to church and meet You. Amen.
