Getting strong
Children's sermon
Object:
a bottle of vitamins
Good morning! I brought this bottle with me today. Can you
tell me what this is? (Show the bottle and let them answer.) Yes,
this is a bottle of vitamins. Do any of you take vitamins? (Let
them answer.) Let me ask you a question. Why do you take
vitamins? (Let them answer.) I think we can all agree that we
take vitamins to strengthen our bodies, help us to grow, and be
generally more healthy. Would you all agree with that? (Let them
answer.)
Well, if the body needs vitamins to stay healthy, what about
our spirit? We are not made up of just a physical body. We all
have spirits and our spirit also needs to be fed and nurtured.
How do you think we can make our spirit stronger? Is there a
vitamin that will strengthen our spirit? (Let them answer.) No,
there isn't a vitamin for the spirit that comes in a bottle like
this, but there are ways we can make our spirit stronger.
Once, the disciples of Jesus asked him if he would increase
their faith. What they really meant was that they wanted a
stronger spirit. Our spirit grows and gets stronger as our faith
gets stronger. Now how would we go about increasing our faith?
(Let them answer.)
The source of our faith is the Word of God. If we want a
stronger faith, we have to spend time with the Word of God, the
Bible. The more time we spend reading the Bible, listening to
preaching from the Bible, and talking with people about it, the
stronger our faith gets. You might say that the Bible is God's
vitamin for our spirit.
Dearest God: Like the disciples of Jesus, we want our faith
increased. Help us to spend time in Your Word so our faith will
be strengthened. Amen.
