Give Thanks!
Children's sermon
Object:
pieces of paper and a marker or pen
Today is Thanksgiving and I want to ask each of you what you
are thankful for. What is it that you have in your life that
makes you happy? As you tell me these things, I'm going to write
each one down on pieces of paper. (Then take your time listening
to each child describe briefly what he or she is thankful for.
They may take some coaxing. You may need to set an example and
say, "I am thankful for all the people here tonight...." If
yours is a small congregation and there are not many children
gathered today, ask members of the congregation to respond to
your question.)
Thank you for telling me everything you are thankful for today. I'm going to take all of these things that you have told me and I am going to put them before God tonight so that God knows we truly are thankful for everything we have.
Now there is another reason I want us to share the things for which we are thankful. That reason is this: I don't want you to worry. One way to keep from worrying is to offer thanks to God for everything you have. Jesus tells us not to worry. That's hard for some people to do. But the best way not to worry is to give thanks to God for all that you are thankful for.
Dearest God: We are thankful for everything. Amen
