God loves us all
Children's sermon
Object:
some kind of gift -- pennies, pencils, oranges, or whatever you would like to share as a reward
Good morning! Is everyone here as happy as you look? (let them answer)
I want to tell you about a story that Jesus told. But first we are going to play a little game. I brought along some shiny new pennies. I plan to give them to you, but first I want to ask you some questions. Then after you answer, I will give out the pennies. Who wants to be first? (get volunteers)
Who is the president of the United States? (tell them if they are right or wrong after they respond to each question) Who is the first person that walked on the moon? How much is two times five? How do you spell "elephant"? What color is grass? How many books are there in the Bible? Which is bigger -- six feet or 72 inches? What is the biggest ocean? (make up other questions so that every child has at least one question, including some that ensure some answers will be wrong)
That was fun, wasn't it? Let's see how many you got right and how many you got wrong. (announce the totals) That's great. Let's give two pennies to everyone who got a right answer. (hand out pennies to those who answered correctly) Now tell me who had a wrong answer? Good, I want to thank you for being part of the game and trying so hard. I am giving each of you two shiny pennies as well.
Now, is everyone happy?
Is it all right with you if the ones who got the wrong answers also got two pennies? (see if someone who got the right answer complains)
These are my pennies, aren't they? Can't I can give them to anyone I choose? Of course I can.
Jesus told a similar story about people who worked on a farm and some of them worked all day and some only worked for an hour or so, but the farm owner paid them all the same. Jesus tried to teach us two lessons. One is that some people will know God all of their lives and will know God's love all of their lives. Other people may only learn about how much God loves them for a very short time, but God will have always loved them. Both kinds of people will share in God's heaven. It is God's heaven and he can invite anyone he wants to share it with him.
In our game some of us knew some of the answers and some did not, but everyone tried. I can give the pennies to anyone I want since they are my pennies, and since I love all of you I want to share my pennies with all of you.
Prayer: Thank you, dear God, for loving us all. Amen.
