God In A Teacup?
Children's sermon
Object:
A teacup
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.... (v. 16a)
Good morning children,
How are you this lovely morning? I'm _______ and so delighted to be here with you.
I love sharing God's word. And I love your listening ears. Does everybody have your listening ears on? Open eyes too? Thinking cap on?
Today I brought this object for you to see and think about. Do you know what it is? (children respond) Yes, it's a teacup. It's just a little quiet teacup. (presenter speaks to the teacup)
“Hello teacup. Thank you for coming to church today.”
If a teacup could talk she would probably say, “Oh, I'm glad to be here too.”
Now I have a big question on this Holy Trinity Sunday. Could this little teacup hold all the water in all the oceans of the planet?
No, no silly - of course not. All the oceans in this little vessel would be ludicrous!
But on this Holy Trinity Sunday, that is what God is like. Our minds are like this little teacups. And God, the Trinity, is like all the oceans of the world. Can our little teacup minds take in all of God. No way. God is vast and mysterious and unlimited. God has no beginning and no ending. God is marvelously beyond our thinking.
But the word Trinity gives us a clue or two.
Now little teacups, let's say the word Trinity together. (children recite -- “Tr - in - it - y.”) Great! God is three but one. In our math 1+1+1 = 3. But in God's math 1+1+1 = 1.
Or put this way -- you can be a son, a brother, and a nephew. You can be a daughter, a sister, and a niece. Three -- but one person.
Best of all, we get a peek of what God is like when we see and believe in Jesus.
For this “Trinity so loved the world he gave his only Son....”
Prayer: Holy Trinity, three in one, our minds and hearts are little. But you are as vast as the ocean. Thank you for coming and showing your love through Jesus. Amen.
