The good shepherd
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: This Sunday is often called "Good
Shepherd Sunday" because of the references to the Good Shepherd,
Jesus and the Lord, our Shepherd in Psalm 23.
* If your church has a stained glass window of Jesus the Good Shepherd, explain the imagery to the children. Better yet, ask them what they think it means.
* Sing hymns to Jesus the Good Shepherd (see "Opening" below).
* Memorize (as best you can) a verse of Psalm 23 or the entire Psalm.
* Analyze each verse of Psalm 23. Ask, "How does this apply to us today?" "How does God act in our lives today?"
* If God was like a good shepherd long ago, what is God like now?
- God is like a good gardener- God is like a good custodian
- God is like a good parent
Very young children:
* Make cutouts of sheep and have the children glue on "wool" (cotton swabs).
* Make shepherd staffs out of pipecleaners.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* "I Love to Tell the Story" is a nice opening hymn.
* Sing "The Lord's My Shepherd."
* Do some research on famous shepherds. One of the more famous is David -- King of Israel and ancestor of Jesus. Others include: Abel, Jacob, and Moses.
* Have the children act out a shepherd story.
