Guided into truth
Children's sermon
Object:
a blindfold and a slip of paper with today's scripture written on it. Keep the paper in a place unseen by the children
I need a volunteer to help me today. I need someone to put on this blindfold and do something for me. (Select a child.) Thank you for helping me, Robert. I am going to put this blindfold on you and I want to make sure that you cannot see anything. (Tie the blindfold on the child.) There. Now you are ready. I have a job I want you to do for me, okay? Hidden somewhere in this room is a piece of paper with today's verse on it. Please find that paper and hand it to me. Here's the hard part. You only have one chance, and you only have fifteen seconds. Okay? Ready, go!
(The child will begin to look around uncertainly, or perhaps object to your instructions. Let him struggle with the dilemma for a few moments.) Okay. You look like you need help. Let me see if I can use my eyes to help you find the paper. (Bring out the slip of paper and hand it to the child.) Okay. Now take off your blindfold and read what the paper says. (Listen as the child reads.)
It seemed like I gave Robert an impossible task, didn't it? It was hard because the job was too big for one person to do alone. How was he supposed to find the paper without being able to see? If he did find a paper, how was he supposed to know if it was the right one? Clearly, this was just too hard for him to do without help. Our Bible verse today says that the Holy Spirit guides us into truth. That means that the Holy Spirit helps us know the right way to go when we aren't certain. When Robert was struggling with the job, I was able to help him find the right paper. That's what the Holy Spirit does. It helps us know what to do when we get confused. The Holy Spirit is our helper, and we all need help with things every day!
Prayer: Father, thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to guide us. We need help making right decisions, solving problems, and knowing how to live the right way. Help us remember that your Spirit can show us the way to go. Amen.
