How brave are you?
Children's sermon
Object:
a scary Halloween mask
Good morning, boys and girls. This morning I brought with me a
scary Halloween mask. I brought it because it reminds me of this
morning's Bible story. The story is about being brave. This mask
may or may not frighten some people. I'd like to ask you what
things you are afraid of.
Is anyone here afraid of the dark? (Let them answer on each of the following questions.) Is anyone here afraid to cross a busy street? Is anyone here afraid of telling the truth, even if it means admitting that you did something wrong? Even adults are at times afraid of some of these things.
I want to tell you about a little boy who is your age. He was afraid of many things too. Then one Sunday in Sunday school his teacher taught him something that helped him to be brave -- especially when he knew that he had to tell the truth about something. Can anyone imagine what he learned in Sunday school that might help him be brave? (Let them answer.) He learned that Christians are to fear no one at all but God. When it means to fear God, it doesn't mean to be frightened of God, like we are frightened of this mask (hold the mask). To fear God means to honor, love and obey God. When the boy learned this, he decided that he didn't have to be afraid of so many other things. His Sunday school teacher told him one other thing. Christians are to always tell the truth. Christians tell the truth because that pleases God. We tell the truth because we love other people. Sometimes telling the truth is hard to do. Sometimes being brave, when it is easier to be afraid, is hard to do. I want you to remember this week that we who are Christians are to fear nothing except God -- and that means we honor, love and obey God. Christians are to tell the truth at all times. If you do that, you are honoring, loving and obeying God. That is what God wants of us. When we do this, things like this scary mask shouldn't frighten us.
