How good are you?
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers and Parents: The most common false doctrine, even
among some who consider themselves strong Christians, is that we
can earn our way into Heaven by our own works. Our children must
learn the basic Christian truth that Heaven is a gift of God and
that there is no way to be righteous enough to deserve it. We
must rely on the righteousness of Christ for our ticket into
Heaven.
* Make white paper ponchos with the name JESUS written in
large letters on each one. (A large hole for the head in a big
piece of paper is all that is needed.) Mark off an area of a room
and designate this area as Heaven. Have an entrance gate of some
kind and invite the children to come into Heaven through the
gate. As they try to enter, reject each one by telling them that
they are not properly dressed to enter Heaven. When all have been
rejected, explain to them that they can't get into Heaven when we
are dressed in our own clothes. These clothes represent the good
works that we do. Our own good works are not sufficient to gain
us entrance to Heaven. Now, have the children put on the ponchos.
Explain that these ponchos represent the righteousness of Jesus
and that everyone who believes in Jesus is entitled to put one
on. Now have them enter through the gate where they are welcomed
into Heaven. Be sure they understand that admission to Heaven is
given only to those who believe in Jesus, not to those who rely
on their own good works.
* Ask the children to tell you all the good deeds that they
did in the last week. For each good deed mentioned, give them a
token of some kind. When everyone has received at least one
token, ask them how many of these tokens would get them into
Heaven. Make sure they understand that a million or even ten
million would never be enough. Entry to Heaven is given only to
those who believe in Jesus.
No amount of good works would be sufficient.
