Hurry up and wait!
Children's sermon
Object:
A bean (preferably a bean sprout that has grown 7-10 days)
A bean is a seed. Seeds grow into plants. Plants produce more
seeds. I have here a bean that I could plant and it would grow
into a bean plant. Then, if I carefully watered it and took care
of it, what would happen? (Let them answer.) That's right -- it
would grow into a plant. Have any of you ever planted a seed?
(Let them answer.) What kind of plant did it become? (Let them
answer.)
I had a friend once who told me about a time when he was very young and his mother had planted a whole garden of seeds. He had helped her and he was so excited about the seeds and the plants she had told him would come that he went out every day to look at the ground. But nothing seemed to be happening, so he uncovered the seeds to see what they were doing.
You can't do that! The seed has to sprout in its own time. It will become a plant -- but not right away. To be a good gardener, you have to wait. Such waiting is called patience.
We are getting ready for Christmas, but it has not come yet. We must be patient.
Some day we will join Jesus, but until that wonderful day comes, we must be patient -- just like a gardener is patient until the right time comes. Christmas will be here some day -- but not yet! So I am patient. I wait. Sometimes I don't like to wait, but I know that many times that is the only thing I can do -- WAIT!
Sometimes it is easier to WAIT when we share the good news with others. It's like other good news. If my dog is going to have puppies, I tell my friends. If I have a birthday coming, I tell others. If my family is going on a trip, I share that news. Jesus is coming!
Dear Lord: We wait for you. We are patient because we know we can trust you. Amen.
