'I Love You Children' -- Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
Make a “stop” sign our of paper and staple to a stick
“Let the children come to me; do not stop them...” (v.14b)
Good morning children,
I am really happy to see you. I have a wonderful story from the bible to talk to you about today. It is about Jesus and children.
One day people were bringing children to Jesus. They knew Jesus loved children.
They brought their children so Jesus could touch them and, I suppose, talk to them.
What do you suppose Jesus said to the children? (children respond)
This is what happened, the disciples decided to put a stop to the children coming to Jesus. (show stop sign) The Bible says, “the disciples spoke sternly to them.” How do you think the children felt when the disciples tried to stop them from seeing Jesus? (children respond)
How do you feel when adults speak sternly or harshly to you? (children respond)
Sometimes children, and adults too, need to be disciplined and spoken sternly to.
But not this day when the people were joyfully bringing the children to see Jesus.
Jesus saw what was happening and he got angry. He told the disciples to stop it!
(presenter dramatically tears up the stop sign and tosses it to the side)
Then Jesus said,“Let the children come to me; do not stop them...” and with his heart full of love, Jesus lifted the children onto his lap.
He touched them and blessed them.
So how do you think the children felt after Jesus said that? (children respond)
This story in Mark’s gospel reminds us of baptism. In baptism even little children like you are brought before God. By water and the word of God, children enter God’s kingdom. Being baptized as a child or adult, you and I are loved into the kingdom.
Prayer: Jesus, you touched and blessed little children. Thank you. Keep it up. Amen.
