'I promise ...'
Children's sermon
Object:
a credit card and a wedding ring
Sometimes I buy things with a little card. How many of you have seen one of these? (Show them the credit card and let them answer.) Many people use credit cards. The way it works is like this: I give the store my card with the number on it and then I sign a piece of paper that shows how much I am charging. When I sign that receipt, it is like a promise that I will pay for whatever I put on my credit card. A credit card with my signature is like a promise.
When a woman and a man get married, they nearly always exchange rings and promises to each other. The wedding ring is a promise that the woman will be faithful to the man and the man to the woman for as long as they live! The wedding ring is a sign of the promises. Marriage is one of the biggest promises people make to one another.
Throughout our lives we make promises to other people. I promise that I will pay for whatever I put on my charge card. I promise to be faithful to my spouse. I may promise my friend that I won't tell a secret. People make promises all the time. Have any of you made any promises recently? (Let them answer.) I'm sure you have. We do it all the time. We make big promises like marriage as well as little promises like promising to say "hello" to a friend.
God also makes promises. Some promises are big and some are little. Today we read about one of the biggest promises God makes to those who belong to God. He promises he will "wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more...." Wow! No more sadness; no more crying; no more feeling afraid! God is making the promise of heaven. Every believer goes to heaven. It is a wonderful place and we have God's good promise that we shall go there.
Dear God: Thank you for being so good and making such a wonderful promise. Amen.
