Jesus Is King of All
Children's sermon
Object:
two crowns: one king's crown and one made of thorns
The Point: Jesus is King of all of life and of our hearts
The Lesson: Thank you, boys and girls for joining me in this time of sharing. I brought a crown (or a picture of a crown) with me this morning. A king would wear a crown that is made of precious metal like gold or silver. He would have precious stones like diamonds and rubies placed on it. The crown would look very rich and important. When a person wore the crown, people would see its spender and known that that person wearing it was a king. If a woman wore a crown they would know that she was a queen. The crown was the symbol of authority and power.
In our Bible reading we heard Pilate ask Jesus if he was the "King of the Jews." Jesus answered by saying his kingdom was not of this world. His kingdom was to be understood differently than a kingdom in the world. Jesus is king not just of the world but of our hearts too. A worldly king rules just in the territory of his kingdom. Jesus rules not just in this world but in our life to come.
Jesus' crown is different too. His crown is a crown of thorns. When Jesus was nailed to the cross, his captors placed a crown of thorns on his head to cause him pain and humiliation. In his resurrection, Jesus turned the crown of dishonor into a crown of great glory and saving love. Nothing is more precious. In his life, death, and resurrection Jesus revealed the truth that without God's love and forgiveness we would not have an eternal kingdom. The crown of thorns announces to the world that Jesus came not to judge us as an earthly king but to save us as a heavenly king.
Jesus is truly king of all creation and of our hearts. If we follow him and truly let him rule in our lives, we shall have eternal life.
Prayer: Let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Lord Jesus, you truly are King of kings and Lord of lords. You came not to rule over us with might and power but to save us and to rule through love and peace. Jesus help us to declare you our king by all that we say and do. Jesus, King and Savior, we pray in your divine name. Amen.
