The Lamb of God
Children's sermon
Object:
a stuffed animal lamb or a picture of a lamb
Good morning! What do I have here? (Show the stuffed animal
or the picture.) Yes, this is a lamb, and the lamb has a very
special meaning to Christians. Who is often called a lamb in the
Bible? (Let them answer.)
Once, when John the Baptist was baptizing people in the
river, he saw Jesus walking toward him and he said, "Here is the
Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" Why do you
think he would call Jesus a lamb? (Let them answer.)
To understand why Jesus is called a lamb, we have to go back
thousands of years before he was born. When the people of Israel
were slaves in Egypt, God had them sacrifice a lamb and put some
of the lamb's blood on their doorframes. Those who did that were
saved when the angel came by to kill all of the firstborn sons of
the Egyptians. The blood of the lamb saved them.
Jesus came to earth to save all of us. We are saved by the
blood he shed for us on the cross. So he is the Lamb of God that
takes away the sin of the world. That's why he is often referred
to as a lamb. Without his blood being shed for us, we would all
be lost. Let's thank him for what he did for us.
Dear Jesus, Lamb of God: We thank you for becoming our
sacrificial lamb and dying on the cross to save us from our sins.
Amen.
