Life saver
Children's sermon
Object:
A Livesaver candy (or, preferably, a cork ring buoy life
preserver)
One of the things I love about summertime is the opportunity
to go swimming. I love to swim! Do any of you like to swim? (Let
them answer.)
Have you ever noticed that nearly every swimming pool has a doughnut-shaped thing hanging on the wall? What do you call those things? (Let them answer.) They are called lifesavers. I have a candy that looks like a small version of what you see at the pool or lake.
What are lifesavers used for? (Let them answer.) They are used in times of trouble. If I don't know how to swim and the lifeguard sees me, he or she might throw me a lifesaver and I can then stay afloat until I get back to safety. I'm glad pools and many beaches have them.
Jesus is kind of like a lifesaver. In fact, he is a real life saver. We even call him "Savior." The word "Jesus" means "one who saves." Jesus saves all who believe in him. That is an important teaching of this congregation. That is a teaching you will hear over and over again. Today you have learned that the name "Jesus" means "life saver" because Jesus saves us from death.
Dear Jesus: Thank you for saving us and teaching us the meaning of your name. Amen.
(Distribute the Lifesaver candies to each child as he or she returns to his or her place.)
