Look for the star
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Have an Epiphany pageant to close off the
Christmas season and the twelve days of Christmas with the
children of your church. Have people stationed in various parts
of the home or church building where you might go to ask the
question, "Are you the Messiah?" They will, of course, say, "No."
The first group might add, "Look for the star." Involve as many
children as possible. Let them ask the question. Let them get
into the role of wise men from the East. Help them relive the
story and see that Jesus is more than king of the Jews or king of
this congregation or home. Jesus is king of all!
The Epiphany pageant might become an annual event for your congregation. This is a great year to start it since the Epiphany falls on a Saturday. It could also be part of the Sunday school program for the Sunday following Epiphany (a Sunday typically affected with attendance problems because of the holidays).
Serve refreshments (star-shaped cookies would be great). King Jesus is the star of this event. Teach the children the significance of the men from the East being outsiders because they were not Jewish. "We also are not Jewish and might have been outsiders if Jesus were only king of the Jews."
