Mind and body
Children's sermon
Object:
a variety of first aid items -- bandages, gauze and tape, first aid
cream and a relaxation tape
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a first aid kit this morning so we
could talk about healing. Let's see what I have in here. (Show the items as
you talk about them.) Here's a bandage. There are lots of different sizes of
bandages. There are large ones for hurt knees. There are little round ones
for tiny cuts. There are bandages to go on knuckles so you can bend them.
Here's some first aid cream. What do we use it for? (Let them respond.)
We put it on before we put the bandage on. It puts special healing medicine
right into the cut. Here is some gauze and some tape. What do we use this
for? (Let them respond.) This is to make what we call a dressing. It's a
larger bandage for a larger cut or sore. Sometimes a dressing is put over
where a person has had surgery. It protects the surgery place so it can
heal just like a tiny bandage protects a tiny cut. Here's a cassette tape.
Does anyone have any idea why this tape might be in our first aid kit? (Let
them respond.) This tape is called a relaxation tape. It has special music
and words to help you relax. Some people call it an imagining tape. You
close your eyes and while you listen a voice helps your mind imagine
things like a walk in the forest or a pretty waterfall or the ocean waves.
Now you're still probably wondering what a tape has to do with bandages.
It's because doctors are finding out that music and imagining helps our
bodies heal. People with a disease called cancer imagine that the cancer is
being destroyed and doctors find out what it is. Our bodies and our minds
work together to heal us.
Our lesson today is about 10 people who had a skin disease. They had large sores all over them and people were afraid of them. Jesus made them well again. Nine of them went away, but one of them turned around to thank Jesus. Jesus told him that his faith made him well. Jesus knew that the man believed he was going to get well. Do you think the man was happy not to have sores all over him anymore? (Let them respond.) I think he was very happy. Jesus said we have the power to believe that we can be well and healthy. We need to remember that God made us with that power to let our minds and our bodies work together.
