More like Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a loaf of sliced bread, a toaster, some butter, jam, and a dinner knife
And it is by God's will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the
body of Jesus Christ once for all. (v. 10)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today, we are going to talk about being more like Jesus. Does anyone here feel like he or she is Jesus? (let them answer) No, none of us is Jesus, but let's pretend for a moment that we want to be more like Jesus. Let's pretend that Jesus is the best piece of toast that was ever made. How many of you like toast in the morning for breakfast? (let them answer)
What do you have to have first if you are going to make toast? (let them answer) Very good, you need sliced bread. Then what do you do with the bread? (let them answer) All right, the next thing we need to do is to put it in the toaster. What does the toaster do to bread? (let them answer) That's right, it cooks it or makes it change from soft bread to a golden brown piece of bread. How many of you eat your toast just like it comes out of the toaster? (let them answer) None of you do. What do you do with toast after it has been in the toaster? (let them answer) Very good, you put butter on the toast and anything else? (let them answer) You put on jelly or jam. Now you have a great piece of toast.
In our Bible lesson today, the writer talks about us becoming more like Jesus than we are. According to the writer, we have a good beginning when we are born but as we grow and want to be more like Jesus we need God's help. If Jesus is the best piece of toast there ever was, then God wants us to be like toast, also. Suppose you are a piece of bread, a nice piece of bread, but you are not toasted and you do not have any butter and jelly. That is God's job. That is what the Spirit of God does with us. Every day God is teaching us about being one of God's people.
He starts with us just the way we are. Then God's Spirit begins to teach us how to live in this world and how to love Jesus. God's Spirit forgives us for our sins, God's Spirit teaches us to share and love other people. God's Spirit teaches us that Jesus died on a cross for us so that we can live with Jesus forever.
It takes a lot of care to make the right kind of toast. We don't want to make it too hot or it will burn. We don't want it too light or it will not be crisp. The same is true with our lives. We need the Spirit of God to lead us in the right direction so that we will be more and more like Jesus. Amen.
