A mystery
Children's sermon
Object:
a small seed
Today I want to explain everything about the kingdom of God
so that you can understand it all. But before I try to tell you
everything about the kingdom of God, I want you to tell me
everything about this seed. Tell me everything you know about
it. (Let the children answer. As they tell you about the seed,
keep probing for more ..."But how does the seed produce roots?...
How does it know how tall to get? ... How does it know it is not
an oak or a tulip?" ... and so forth.)
You can't tell me everything about how a seed becomes a plant. Neither can I tell you everything about the kingdom of God. I said earlier that I "want to explain everything about the kingdom of God," but I can't. All I really know is that it happens. Jesus explained it like this: the kingdom of God is like a seed that is planted. It takes root, grows, develops stem and branches, and then produces even more seeds so that the whole cycle can be repeated again. He said the kingdom of God is like a small seed -- like a mustard seed. The mustard seed is a very tiny, black seed. But when it falls to the ground and gets sufficient water and light, it becomes a large bush -- large enough so that even the birds roost in it. How this happens is as much a mystery as how any seed becomes a full-grown plant.
As these are mysteries, so also is the kingdom of God. It is a kingdom that we cannot understand with our minds. It is only by believing in God that the kingdom comes to us. You and I are part of that kingdom even though we do not understand how it works. Many things we must just believe and accept -- even though we do not understand.
Dear God: Thank you for making us a part of your kingdom even though we do not understand everything. Amen.
