Never giving up
Children's sermon
Object:
some baby shoes, a pacifier
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have spent time around babies? (let them answer) Babies are so cute when they are happy but hard to please when they are upset. Babies can't talk, can they? (let them answer) So when they don't get what they want they cry. When they are hungry they cry. When they are sleepy they cry. When a stranger tries to hold them they cry. How do we know if babies are sick, hungry, or tired? (let them answer) Most of the time a baby's mom can figure out what's wrong even when we can't. Moms know a lot about their babies that other people will never know. My answer for a crying baby is to give it a pacifier!
How many of you have ever watched a baby learn to walk? (let them answer) What happens when he first takes a couple of steps on his own? (let them answer) That's right, he falls down. It doesn't make any difference how many times a baby falls, he or she gets up and tries again. We don't know why babies keep trying but they do. Even bumped heads, bruises, and sore bottoms won't make babies stop trying.
Many of the people in Jesus' time thought he had amazing powers, but they couldn't understand why he let himself be captured before he died. They didn't understand why Jesus would agree to carry a heavy cross up a steep hill. But we understand that God had a plan for Jesus. He cured people who were sick and even dead. He made people who were once deaf or blind be able to hear or see again. He talked about a God of love and mercy. Jesus did not have a lot of money or an army, and he never lived in a palace. Jesus loved the poor and talked about them like they were his friends. It's difficult for some people to understand Jesus for these reasons.
God asked Jesus to die for people's sins. Jesus said he was dying for the sins of everyone who had ever lived and everyone who hadn't even been born yet. Sin would no longer keep people from God's kingdom because Jesus was going to have all of the sins dumped on him. That was God's plan and a lot of people didn't understood it then and don't understand it now. But Jesus says you don't have to understand God's plan. You just have to believe that he died for us and we will all go to God's kingdom.
