The offering
Children's sermon
Object:
an offering envelope
Today we are in the church building and we see various things
that belong there. We see pews, we see stained glass, we see a
pulpit. What part of the church building do you think is the most
important part? One of the most important parts is the altar.
The altar has always been important in the history of the church because many years ago people would bring important offerings to the altar and would leave them there. The important things to people long ago were things like animals and grain. The animals were important because the chickens laid eggs and the lambs provided wool for clothing. The grain was important because they ate the grain. Yet these important things were brought to the altar and left there so that God would be pleased.
Today also we will bring things to the altar. We call them our "offering." What we bring today is important as well. Money is important to us. We will put our money in envelopes like this and place it in the basket as it is passed around and then that will be brought here.
We do this important activity for a totally different reason than people used to bring their offerings to God. They wanted to please God. We bring our offerings because we are thankful. We no longer have to try to please God. We are thankful that we do not have to buy or in some way win God's pleasure. God is already pleased because Jesus was offered for our sake. Now we are thankful for that.
