Plenty of love
Children's sermon
Object:
small paper cups (plastic communion cups work well), a
large pitcher of water, and a large bowl to catch the runoff (An
effective and less-messy option is to use rice instead of water.)
God loves you and me. That is a wonderful thing. When I think
of God's love for me, I think of myself as being like this little
paper cup. (Hold up the cup.) God pours God's love on me (pour
from the large pitcher into the small cup). God fills me with
love. What a wonderful thing! I'm thankful to have God's love.
Does God stop there -- oh no! God keeps on pouring and pouring (pour from the pitcher and let the cup overflow with water [or rice] with the excess falling into the larger bowl). Why all this love? Why does God give me more than enough love? God gives me more love than I can handle so that I may use that extra love to love others. That is why I love you so much and love others so much. God has filled me with so much love I can't use it all myself.
(Take the runoff from the pitcher and pour into the remaining empty cups.) From all the extra love God gives me, I have more than enough to give others. God's love has already filled me and now there's all this extra to use for you and you and you and you and all the people of the world. Can you see why we speak about love so much in the church? We can love others because God so loves us. The wonderful love of God just spills over as we love others. God's love never runs out for us. So we keep on loving others, too.
Dear God: Thank you for giving us so much of your love. Help us to use it well by loving others. Amen.
