Preaching from a boat
Children's sermon
Object:
a tall stepladder
Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. (v. 33)
Good morning, boys and girls. Do you remember last week when we talked about how Jesus sent out the disciples and asked them to go into the villages and preach and heal in his name? (let them answer) Do you remember how excited they were when they came back? (let them answer) They were very excited because they were able to use the power that Jesus gave them to heal the sick and share the message of love with all the people. Many of the people who listened to the disciples came back to meet Jesus and thank him. It was a big crowd and they kept trying to get nearer and nearer to him. Jesus told his disciples to gather all of their things and meet him on the beach where there was a boat they could use. Jesus also got into the boat. The people stood and applauded and shouted praises to God as the boat sailed out on the sea.
For a while it was very peaceful and the disciples of Jesus reported everything they had done. Peter talked about a healing, Thomas spoke of a class he taught under a tree. John reported a wonderful visit he had in the home of a very sick man that was healed of his disease. Matthew spoke of the wonderful meal the people had for him and Philip after they led a worship service. Every one of the disciples had something to say.
Back on shore, the people followed the boat until they could no longer see it. Then one of the boys in the crowd climbed a very tall tree. The young man began to report that he could see the boat that Jesus and the disciples were in and that it was heading toward a shore a few miles down the road. The boy in the tree kept sharing directions. Soon the people began to run toward where they believed Jesus was going. Down the road they went taking their sick people along with them. What began as just a few people became a crowded road. But it was a very happy group of people who knew that soon they would see Jesus again.
When Jesus and the disciples landed the boat on the shore they were surprised to see a crowd of people waiting for them. They could also see the rest of the people walking and running to the beach. There would be no rest that day. Jesus and the disciples walked among the crowd and thanked them for coming. Then Jesus began to heal the sick and talk with each person who wanted to speak with him. It was a great day for the people who met the boat.
The next time you see a really big tree I want you to think about the day a young man climbed that tree and watched Jesus and the disciples sail their boat. Maybe someday you will be able to climb a big tree and give directions to people looking for Jesus. Amen.
