Protect Them
Children's sermon
Object:
A glove
“Holy Father, protect them in your name....” (v.11a)
Hello children,
I'm so glad to see you this morning. How are you? (children may answer) Notice, I have something on my hand. What is it? (children answer- “a glove”)
Yes, it's a glove, and I am wearing it for a special reason.
And the special reason is to demonstrate a very important truth.
So what does a glove do? Its main purpose is to protect. This glove protects my hand from hurt and harm. It protects my hand from the cold. This amazing glove protects from cuts and bruises and injuries. (presenter speaks to the glove) “Thank you glove, for protecting my hand.”
Jesus was going away. He would not be with his disciples any more. So Jesus prayed a protection prayer. He asked God to protect his disciples.
“Protect them,” he says, “from the evil one. Protect them and guard them from choosing wrong paths. Protect them from sin.”
How do you think Jesus' disciples felt when they learned that Jesus was going away? How did they feel knowing Jesus and was praying for them? (children offer their thoughts) How do people feel when they learn they are being thought of and prayed for?
You and I can pray protection prayers too.
Let's take this glove and let it guide us in praying protection prayers for others.
(presenter points to each finger on the glove as he/she speaks)
Let the thumb represent praying for others as our neighbors, church and nation.
Let the trigger finger represent our teachers who point the way.
Let the large middle finger represent our leaders and all in authority.
Let the ring finger represent marriage, and family.
Let the little finger represent the “little people” that is, the poor, the weak, the hungry.
Prayer: Holy Father, protect others. Protect our teachers. Protect our leaders. Protect families. Protect the little ones, as Jesus prayed protection for his disciples. Amen.
