Quenching a thirst
Children's sermon
Object:
an old watch or something given to you by your father or mother (or grandfather or grandmother) that has some practical use but, even more, it reminds you of them
Good morning, boys and girls. The Bible story this morning is about Jesus and a woman he met at a well. Jesus taught the woman about God's plan and how she could be part of it. She rushed back to her village and urged everyone to come and meet Jesus. He told them that no matter how much water they drank, they would be thirsty again. But if they took his teachings seriously, they would never doubt anything again. The people believed in Jesus.
I have a watch here. It's very special to me and I love to have it on my wrist. There is no battery so I have to wind it. It doesn't tell the day of the week or the date. I could buy a new watch that would be waterproof and glow in the dark.
This watch is very special to me because my father gave it to me after he'd used it for many years. It keeps good time. I wind it every morning and it works well. The best part of this watch isn't the way it keeps time but the memories I have of my father. My father died several years ago but I think about him a lot. I remember when we would work in his wood shop. I thought I was being a lot of help because he made me feel that way. I remember when he would take me to a ball game and we'd share some popcorn. I touch this watch and in my mind I can see him decorating the Christmas tree and setting up the train that ran on tracks around the tree. I can also remember all of the little houses, the train station, the church, and the school that he made to go with the train. I remember the day my father bought a new car and he invited us all to take a ride with him and we ended up at the ice cream shop. I just touch the watch or look at it and the memories of my father come rushing back into my mind and I love it.
Jesus met a woman at a well. It was an important well because it was first used by a famous hero, Jacob. Jesus told her that drinking water from that well was like me reading time on my watch. I will have to do it over and over again. But Jesus said if she believed in him she would never be thirsty for the Spirit of God again. That is the best thing my father ever taught me. He taught me to believe in Jesus first and everything else would be all right.
