Rejoice!
Children's sermon
Object:
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. (vv. 4-5)
Object: ask the choir to sing a verse with chorus of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and a verse of "Rejoice, The Lord Is King"; also have them sing just the word "rejoice" at the appropriate times
Good morning, boys and girls. Today I have asked our choir to help us with the children's sermon. I love to hear a choir sing, and I love the hymns that make you feel "up."
Today is Thanksgiving and it is a time to do what? (let them answer) That's right, it is a time to thank God for all of the things he has done for us. We thank him for the food we eat, for the homes in which we live, for the love we share with our family and friends, for our church, for our schools, for our government, for all the leaders, for the doctors and nurses that keep us healthy, for the police and fireman who keep us safe, and for everything that is good.
But the Bible says that there is something else that we should do today. Let's listen to the choir and see if you can guess what that is? (have the choir sing one verse and the chorus of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel")
How many of you have heard this hymn before? (let them answer) Do you know what else we are supposed to do today? (let them answer)
Maybe I can ask the choir to sing one other hymn and see if you hear the word we are trying to find. (ask the choir to sing the first verse of "Rejoice, The Lord Is King") Now do you know the key word? (let them answer) That's right, it is rejoice!
What a great word. (have the choir sing just the word "rejoice") It makes you tingle all over doesn't it? It gives me chills. What does the word "rejoice" mean? (let them answer) It means, "Be happy" or it means "Give praise" or "Thank you, Lord."
On Thanksgiving Day, we should rejoice. I am going to ask everyone to stand and sing one verse (announce which verse you want) of this great hymn "Rejoice, The Lord Is King," and while they are singing I want to hear you say, "I'm happy," and "Thank you, Lord." (have the choir and congregation sing the verse and the children say with you the words, "I'm happy" and "Thank you, Lord")
What a wonderful Thanksgiving this will be. Remember, when you eat that wonderful meal or play with your relatives, that Thanksgiving is a day to rejoice as well as to give thanks to God.
