“...all who touched it were healed...” (v. 56b)
Good morning dear children,
Can you remember a time when you were mad? (children respond) Can you remember a time when you were sad? (children respond) Can you recall a time when you were glad? (children respond) It's okay to have mad, sad, and glad feelings from time to time.
Today I want to tell you about a sad time and a glad time in the Bible.
First a sad time. (show sad face)
Jesus was just getting back from a retreat when he saw large crowds of people coming to him. They looked to him like a flock of sheep that had no shepherd. They were looking for a leader and a teacher. Jesus felt a deep sadness for them. He had compassion for them. Compassion means to have love and a tender heart for someone. Can you imagine people being like a flock of sheep with no shepherd? (children respond) It's like a classroom with no teacher. It's like an airplane with no pilot. It's like a soccer team with no coach.
So tender-hearted Jesus became a shepherd and a teacher to the people by teaching them. (show glad face)
Then on another occasion, near a town called Gennesaret, many, many people came running to him. They brought the sick on mats (show sad face). They brought the sick to him in the marketplace. Everywhere they brought the ill to him for healing. (show sad face).
All they wanted to do was to touch Jesus, even just touch his cloak, hoping to be healed.
And the people were healed! (show glad face)
The sheep had a shepherd. The students had a teacher. The sick had a healer.
And all of this teaching and healing happened because Jesus was tender-hearted.
Prayer: Dear tender-hearted, loving Jesus, thank you for you -- our shepherd, teacher, and healer. Amen.
