Sharing love
Children's sermon
Object:
a rake
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul,
and with all your mind. (v. 37b)
Good morning, boys and girls! Look what I've brought with me! Do you know what it is? (show the rake; allow answers) How many of you have ever used a rake? (allow answers) What did you use it for? (allow answers) When did you use it? (allow answers)
Our Bible verse today is from the gospel lesson: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind." Basically, we should love God in everything we do and think! Today, we're going to learn how to love God with a rake.
How do you think we can love God by using a rake? Any guesses? (allow answers) We're going to rake some leaves. Yes, I said it, "rake some leaves!" Did you all bring outdoor clothes? Well, all right. We're not going to rake leaves right now. But we can use our rakes to let God's love shine to our neighbors. How many of you know a neighbor who isn't able to rake his or her leaves? (allow answers) Some of our neighbors may be too sick to rake their leaves; others may be allergic to grass and have a hard time raking their leaves. Maybe your neighbors have to care for sick relatives and aren't home enough to keep their yard leaf free. That's where the rake comes in.
It's good that it's autumn now, because it's the perfect time to do this. Take your mom or dad and several rakes and knock on your neighbor's door. Tell them that you want to rake their leaves for free! They might be very surprised! Tell them that God loves them and you want to share God's love with them by helping them with their yard. Then have your mom and dad help you rake! You may have a lot of fun working to share God's love!
Rakes aren't the only things we can use to show that we love God. What else can we use? (allow answers each time) How can we use those things? What can we do for our neighbors to show that God loves them? In the summer, we can offer to water their flowers. In the winter, we can offer to walk their dog. If we bake cookies, we can take them some. There are all kinds of ways that we can love God through our actions and words. This week, your challenge is to share God's love with at least one new person. How are you going to do that? You will do it however you want to! Amen!
