Transforming
Children's sermon
Object:
a high school girl putting on her makeup and fixing her hair
And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though
reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of
glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. (v. 18)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to have some fun. I asked one of our wonderful teenage girls to do something that I am sure she would rather not do. But she is going to do it so that we can really learn something. I have invited __________ to come into church almost the way she got up this morning. Most of us never get to see what a pretty girl does every day before she goes to school or goes out on a date. (have her put on her makeup and comb and brush her hair to begin her transformation)
While ____________ is doing this and all of us are watching her become really pretty, I would like to tell you that this is Transfiguration Sunday.
This is a very special day because it is the day that Jesus took three of his disciples and went up a mountain. At the top of the mountain Jesus turned a brilliant white color, so bright that the disciples' eyes were almost blinded. They also heard the voice of God telling them that Jesus was his Son.
Paul was not there but he also saw Jesus as brilliant as the sun when he was walking from one city to another city. Paul knew that he was changed. The changing did not all come in one day but almost every day he came closer to Christ Jesus.
You can see the wonderful things that are taking place on __________'s face. Her eyes look different, her cheeks look different, and so do her lips. In a few minutes we will see what she is going to do with her hair. ______________ is changing before our very eyes.
The same thing happens to your heart when you know Jesus. It may start with a big change but the more you learn about Jesus, pray with Jesus, worship with Jesus, the more changes happen to you.
I really want to thank ___________ for sharing with us today. Remember, please, that we should change every day, becoming closer to Jesus, just like _____________ prepares for her day and makes us appreciate how pretty she is every day of her life. Amen.
