Trinity: Father, Son, And Holy Spirit
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a hardboiled egg (cut in half with the shell) and an apple (cut in half)
The Point: God, the Trinity, has come to us as God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together.
In our Bible reading Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit reveals truth about Jesus to all his believers. As the Holy Spirit helps us to understand Jesus as the one who has come to save us and to make us children of God, he also helps us to obey Jesus as our Lord. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit acts and guides as if Jesus and the Spirit are one. Jesus also said the he and the Father are one. As the Holy Spirit reveals Jesus to us, he is also revealing God our Father in heaven. To know God and Jesus who are one is to also know the Holy Spirit because the three are one. We call this wondrous revelation of God, Trinity.
We can never fully understand the nature of God. But to give us some ideas, I brought two items. (show children) The first is an egg. You see I have hardboiled egg. I have cut the egg in half. Now what do you notice? (let children respond) There are three parts: the shell, the egg white, and the egg yolk. Three parts but one egg and they all have the same purpose to give new life, a baby chick. I also brought a single apple. I have slit it in two as well. What do you notice about this apple? (let children respond) Again you will notice three parts: the skin, the meat, and the seeds. The three parts make one apple all with the same purpose to give new life, an apple tree.
God the Holy Trinity has come to us as God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit: three natures of the same God. All with the same purpose -- to give new life, making us children of God.
Prayer: Let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Jesus, in you we have discovered the love of God, our Father in heaven. Your promised gift of the Holy Spirit helps us to understand that you are God’s love in our midst. Help us to embrace the fullness of your love even though we cannot fully understand it. In the name of God, the Father, Jesus, the Son, and the Holy Spirit we pray. Amen.
