A verse to remember
Children's sermon
Object:
string tied around a finger
Good morning, boys and girls. Have you ever seen anyone with a
string tied around his finger like this? (Let them answer.) Why
do you suppose I've tied a string around my finger? (Let them
answer.) Sometimes people do things like this so that they will
remember to do something. Some people write notes to themselves
instead of tying strings around their fingers. It's like making a
list to take to the grocery store.
I tied this string around my finger so that I will remember something special this morning. I want to remember to tell you a very special verse from the Bible. It is a verse that I've memorized. It is a verse that nearly everyone in church today knows. I want to teach it to you. That way you will have it memorized also. The verse is from John 3:16.
Listen as I recite it. Then I'll help you recite it. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."
(Break the verse into sections. Recite these sections with students. Then try the entire verse.)
Let's try it in a couple sections first: For God so loved the world ... (have students repeat this) that he gave his only Son ... (have students repeat this) so that everyone who believes in him ... (have students repeat this) may not perish ... (have students repeat this) but have eternal life. (have students repeat this)
Very good. Now let's try the entire verse. (Repeat the entire verse.) Very good. This is a very important verse in the Bible. The next time you have to remember something, see if you can also recite this verse to yourself. Try it at home this week. Ask someone in your home to help you with it. It is a wonderful verse to remember.
