The Very Very Best Gift of all
Children's sermon
Object:
Nativity set
“And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (v. 7)
Good Morning boys and girls,
Happy Christmas. Are you excited like I am today? What makes you and me so deleriously excited and happy on Christmas day?
Of course -- today is Jesus' birthday! He was born, of all places, in this manger. (point to the manger in the Nativity scene -- talk about why Jesus was born in a manger)
Since Christmas is Jesus' birthday what about your birthday? What did you get?
(children answer -- cake, friends and gifts etc.) Getting presents are fun. You open a gift and -- surprise! Can you tell me about something you got at one of your birthdays?
(children share)
Did you know that one thing that makes your parents happy is giving a gift to you?
It's fun to get but it's just as, and even more fun, to give.
There's a Christmas carol that sings about a donkey that gives Mary a ride to Bethlehem, and a lamb that gives her wool to keep baby Jesus warm and a dove who coos a lullaby to baby Jesus. It's a make believe Christmas carol but it's message is fascinating. It's all about giving.
If we make believe animals can give a gift to Jesus, what gift might your pet dog give to you? (happiness, unconditional love) Or your pet cat? (purring, love and affection)
Can you think of a gift that you could give to someone? What gift could you give to a person in a nursing home? To a person in a mission facility? To a missionary? To a pet shelter?
The greatest most wonderful gift in the entire universe is the gift of the baby Jesus to the world and especially to you and to me. What do you say when you receive a gift?
(thank you)
Prayer: Dear God, we thank you for the loving gift of Jesus to us. Amen.
