Waiting and growing
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of a poinsettia plant
Good morning! Who can tell me the meaning of the word
"patience"? Patience means waiting without getting all upset.
If I'm hungry but dinner isn't ready yet, I have to be patient.
If I'm this tall and want to be this tall, I have to wait. I
need patience. Likewise we need patience today. Christmas is
coming, but it is not here yet! This is the season of Advent and
Advent is a time for waiting and growing. When I think about
waiting, I think of the beautiful flowers we will have in this
place on Christmas. Does anyone remember the name of the flowers
we use at Christmas? (Let them answer.) I have a picture of
some right here. (Show them the picture of the poinsettia
plant.) Why do you suppose we don't have any of them now? (Let
them answer.) They are not ready yet! Right now the flowers we
will use at Christmastime are in a greenhouse. They are getting
ready to bloom and turn brilliant red for our joy on Christmas.
Poinsettias, like all good things, take time.
So we have to wait for the poinsettias just as we must wait
for Christmas. But Christmas is coming. And while we wait, this
is a wonderful time for us to grow as Christians. We can grow by
learning more about Jesus. We can grow in our love for others.
We can use this time of getting ready for Christmas as a time to
think of others and how we can share good things with them. This
can be a good time for us. As the poinsettias we will use on
Christmas are getting ready for us, so we can get ready for
Jesus!
Dearest Jesus: We prepare for your coming. We wait, but while
we wait, we grow and learn. Amen.
