We are Christians
Children's sermon
Object:
signs carried on sticks that say, "Christians aren't wimps" "Christians aren't sissies""When the going gets tough, Christians get going""Christians aren't chicken"
Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. (v. 66)
Good morning, boys and girls. The other day I went to a parade and I was very impressed with the signs that some of the people carried. Have you ever seen a parade? (let them answer) Were there signs that told you where the people were from? Were there messages like "Free the Hostages" or "We want clean water and clean air"? Everyone that had a sign held it up high so the people who were watching the parade could read the signs. The people that held up signs really believe in what they stand for and they want everyone to know it.
I thought about this when I read today's lesson from the Bible. It is a little different story than the ones we usually read in the Bible, but I think this story happened a lot of times, more than what we think.
In today's story, Jesus taught the people the truth as it was given to him by God, the Father in heaven. Some people were having trouble believing in what Jesus was saying. After talking for a while, the people turned their backs on Jesus and went another way. They did not have a strong enough faith to believe in the truth that Jesus was teaching them.
Usually, we hear all about the people running toward Jesus. We hear that the people who were there hung on every word he said. They shouted "Hosanna! Praise to the Lord! Thank you, Jesus," and many other things. But one day this changed. They wanted Jesus to prove the things he said and when he would not, they turned their backs on Jesus and walked away. This was a strange sight.
I thought about Jesus and how the devil would stir people up and make it hard for Jesus. I also thought about the people in our church and I made up some signs for people to carry that told the rest of the world that it wasn't always easy being a Christian. I would like for each one of you to help carry my signs around the church. Is there anyone here that would like to carry the sign that says, "Christians aren't wimps"? Very good! How about the one that teaches us that "Christians aren't sissies"? I like this one because I think it is really true: "When the going gets tough, Christians get going." Does anyone want to carry, "Christians are not chicken"?
Would you like to carry the signs around your neighborhood and show everyone that does not go to church or believe in Jesus? It is true that we are not wimps or chickens but instead strong followers of Jesus. We must remind ourselves of that fact every day of our lives. Amen.
